What's the Siena Effect?

The purpose of a college education is to build a better life. At Siena Heights University, our purpose goes one step further. We believe education can build a better world. Our students graduate prepared to create positive change. At Siena, you’ll build competence in your area of study, confidence in your talents and abilities, a strong sense of purpose, and the desire to live and work ethically. That’s the Siena Effect.

REAL-WORLD ACADEMICS

As a Dominican institution, we believe in the power of questioning. When it comes to academic programs, we ask ourselves what the world will need in 10, 20, even 100 years. We respond with classes that fulfill those needs – and the needs of a changing society. Siena students graduate with in-depth knowledge in their areas of study, and real-world readiness.

Our academic tradition embraces "disputatio" – good, healthy debate in the search for truth.

SERVICE WITH PURPOSE

At Siena, you’ll create positive change and develop a sense of purpose by contributing to your community. Here, we think of service as a way of life, not just another activity or resumé builder. Visit the Hope Community Center and help seniors with disabilities. Work the lunch line at Daily Bread with your theatre club. Take an alternative spring break to Jamaica. At Siena, you’ll find purpose when you create change.

"A college education isn’t just for yourself – it's also for others. If you can grow and change as a person, then you can certainly make a difference in our world."

- Siena Heights University President Sister Peg Albert

CONNECT WITH CONFIDENCE

Every day at Siena comes with a chance to get involved and build on your talents. We have more than 25 student clubs and organizations, like Habitat for Humanity and the Thinking Hard Club. The heart of campus is the University Center – home to the dining hall, campus bookstore, and coffee shop. And our two freshmen residence halls feature lounges, game rooms, and meeting areas. Here, there's plenty of room for building friendships, building talent, and building confidence.

"I’ve found a group of people who are in my corner. As soon as I stepped on campus, it felt like home."

– Donovan Campbell, South Bend, Indiana

THE ARTS

From music theory to musical theatre, studio art to art history, Siena offers a vibrant arts program that enhances campus life for all. Theatrical and musical performances take place at Francouer Theater, while Klemm Gallery is home to a rotating schedule of fine arts exhibitions by visiting artists, faculty, and students alike. Opportunities are available to combine majors, minors and certifications in areas such as business, psychology, chemistry, museum studies, and teacher education with our nationally accredited art department.

Siena students often are surprised at how easy it is to express their ideas and opinions, no matter how spirited.

SAINTS PRIDE

With more than 600 student-athletes, it's no wonder we're known for our spirit. Top-notch fitness facilities keep our Saints – and all of our students – in winning shape. And you don't have to be an intercollegiate athlete to compete on campus. From flag football to dodgeball, our intramurals calendar is packed with action.

AN ETHICAL HERITAGE

The name Siena honors St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century Italian Dominican who dedicated her life to a quest for truth and social responsibility. Today, our students live by a code of ethics that is a direct reflection of this heritage. You’ll find Siena students spending time with the Dominican Sisters both on and off-campus, getting involved in work ranging from immigration reform to environmental protection.

Our mission is to assist people to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical through a teaching and learning environment which respects the dignity of all.
